Boost America!
Boost America! was the single largest child passenger safety program in automotive history. The $36.5 million effort was launched to shift attitudes and behaviour in favour of the increased use of booster seats. The program was initiated to help parents and caregivers of children between the ages of four and eight understand the importance of using belt-positioning booster seats and to increase the use of these seats nationwide.
The three major components of the program were to provide education; provide grant assistance to existing child passenger safety programs; and distribute over one million booster seats to low-income families and Ford customers.
The multi-faceted campaign included a massive educational component featuring a video by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and endorsed by Nickelodeon’s “Blues Clues”. The kit, sent to 154,000 elementary and pre-schools throughout the United States, included a lesson plan and other materials to help teachers explain auto safety to children in an entertaining, age-appropriate way -- as well as a take home component for parents and caregivers.
- Press events were held in all 50 states followed by distribution events staffed by Boost America! partners.
Other program highlights:
- Twenty-two state grants including 15,000 booster seats granted to 44 Native American groups.
- A rotating dealer-based inspection clinic.
- Work with state governments to implement sensible booster seat legislation and push for new state booster seat laws.
Because there were so many components to this program it was essential to work with experts in many fields including public relations, and non-profit professionals that specialized in low-income screening, child passenger safety and injury prevention.
